Christian Science came to me more than eleven years...
Christian Science came to me more than eleven years ago, at a time of great need. Our little boy had been given up by medical science with what is known as cholera infantum. The kind physician had changed his medicine time after time, and had called twice a day; but he informed me there was nothing left to be done.
In talking to a neighbor whom I knew to be a Christian Scientist, I told her I believed God was going to take our baby from us. She most lovingly explained that God never took anything away from His children, that God is Love and Life, and because we are His children we express Love and Life. After this had been explained to me, I found that each time I went to the shelf to get the baby's medicine I found myself repeating those words; and then I realized that God needed no medicine to assist in healing the child. He was healed, and has had many more proof of this truth since that time. The Scientist who was the channel for this healing, moved away, and is probably ignorant of the healing, proving that "a word spoken in due season, how good is it!"
Though I attended Christian Science services and read some of the Christian Science literature after this experience, it was several years before I realized it was necessary to stand fast with this truth. At this time I was living in a western city on the coast, when I was attacked by a disease of the bowels that seemed to reduce me to a mere shadow in a few weeks. I found myself in a hospital; and after a consultation of three doctors was held, I became worse, until I realized that nothing could heal me but God, through the understanding of Him and His idea as given in Christian Science. I realized I had to pray God to help me in my unbelief; or, rather, I needed to demonstrate what Mrs. Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 23): "The Hebrew verb to believe means also to be firm or to be constant." A Christian Science practitioner was called; and in less than two weeks I was able to walk several blocks, and made the trip of over fifteen hundred miles to our new home. This experience means much to me, as through it I have learned we must express compassion, patience, and love, even as our Master did.
