Among the Churches

Auburn and Lewiston, Maine (First Church).—Interest in the movement of Christian Science here started with the healing of several cases of illness. The first meetings were held in Bank Block, Lewiston. Several changes were made in the places of meeting, every change marking a removal to a larger hall. It was in the year 1913 that it was voted to buy the church edifice on College Street, Lewiston, which had been built and owned by the Society of Friends. Renovations were made that summer; and in October, 1913, the first service was held in a church home of its own. No dedicatory services were held, as the church was not paid for. The building fund which had accumulated had been turned over to The Mother Church at the time the new edifice was erected in Boston, except for a portion of the money which had been willed to the local church with provisions restricting its use. The church records show that in August, 1902, new by-laws were formulated. Revision of the by-laws again took place in 1914. The name of the church was then changed to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Auburn and Lewiston.

The first lecturer on Christian Science was brought here in the fall of the year 1898. A lecture was held each year thereafter. Two lectures in one year were given first in 1914. A Sunday school has been maintained by the church from the early days. The growth has been steady. A Reading Room was established when meetings were held in the halls in Auburn; and one has been kept open daily for many years.

This church organization has met with many obstacles in its journey, which have served to urge it on to greater activity and watchfulness, with a united membership and a bright hope before it, a hope which Christian Science holds out to all. Its members, inspired with a faith based on a demonstrable understanding of the omnipotence of God, are striving for the high objective set by the Apostle Paul and required by Christian Science, namely, "Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ." For the many blessings vouchsafed to us and for divine guidance and protection, we express our heartfelt gratitude.—Lewiston Daily Sun.
