The Lectures

Yokohama, Japan (Society).—Introducing Charles I. Ohrenstein, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Stanley Hughes said in part:—

"At a meeting of the Christian Scientist Association, April 19, 1879, on motion of Mrs. Eddy, it was voted,—To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Church Manual, p. 17). Jesus said, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature;" "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils." These words of our Savior are the basis upon which all true Christianity rests; and yet all these fundamentals were entirely lacking for hundreds of years till our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, made her wonderful discovery, and gave us an interpretation of the Scriptures which has taught us the true meaning of spiritual Life, and the falsity of everything material. Those of us who have followed, or are striving to follow, our Leader's teachings, have good cause to feel boundless gratitude for the wonderful release we have gained from many of our seeming troubles; and we continue in our work with a feeling of confidence that eventually we shall have overcome every disharmony that besets mortal life. We are learning how to banish sin, sickness, sorrow, poverty, and all other discordant conditions.
