A Firm Foundation
All are agreed that the foundation of a building is a most important part of it. Its style of architecture may vary somewhat, but the foundation itself must be firm and stable, in order that the building when completed may prove substantial.
The basis of our thoughts and actions is equally important and essential; and Mrs. Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 468), has given us a sure foundation upon which to build, when she asks and answers the question, "What is the scientific statement of being?" Now, as this statement clearly defines God as All, it is very necessary to gain a true concept of God's nature. To do so, it would be well also for us carefully to study Mrs. Eddy's answer to the question, "What is God?" on page 465 of Science and Health, where she writes: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." Each synonymous term given tends to convey to the thought various concepts of God; and a truer sense, therefore, of the nature of God begins to be unfolded to our consciousness; consequently, a truer sense of man's nature is gained, for in Genesis we are told that "God created man in his own image," "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."
The saying, "There is no royal road to learning," is true in our study of Christian Science. If we wish to enjoy the health and happiness which follow its study and practice, we must be willing to persevere in its study. When the road appears rough and steep, a clearer understanding of God's nature, or of what alone really exists, will enable us to detect and overcome error with the assurance that in our journeying divine Love ever meets our need. When an error has been completely destroyed by Truth, we can rejoice over the experience, on account of our increased spiritual perception.
