In Christian Science, Truth, the divine Mind, called God,...

Modern View

In Christian Science, Truth, the divine Mind, called God, is the sole power which heals both sin and sickness. The Hebrew Scriptures support this great thought of the divine healing of physical ills, referring to it in many places. Through Abraham's prayer his friend Abimelech was healed. Moses taught the children of Israel that if they would hearken to the voice of God and obey His commandments, they would escape the disease of the Egyptians, and he represents God as declaring: "I am the Lord that healeth thee," and "I will take sickness away from the midst of thee." The Psalmist sang, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, . . . who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases," and uttered the prayer, "O Lord, heal me; for my bones are vexed."

While it is probably a fact that most of those who seek the help of Christian Science come to it with the thought uppermost of getting rid of physical ills, they learn at once that health of mind is a prerequisite to health of body. Physical well-being apart from mental, moral, and spiritual well-being receives no consideration in the teaching and practice of Christian Science. When Isaiah wrote, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee," he showed the way to obtain the bodily health which "perfect peace" surely includes. The power of God is universally available to lift mortals out of every ill to which flesh is heir.

Mary Baker Eddy, in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 494), expresses this same thought in the words, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need."
