Christian Science teaches that death, as well as sin and...
Burbank Pathfinder
Christian Science teaches that death, as well as sin and disease, are not real, in the sense that they are not of God. If God is All-in-all, omnipotence, and He made everything that was made, and it was good, then Christian Science avers that these experiences of mortality through which we pass do not belong to His government, and therefore are not real. If this be not so, then man is not immortal, but mortal.
There is, however, no subject on which Christians of every denomination are so generally agreed as that man is immortal. And the Bible contains the record of instances where the material change called death was overcome through an understanding of God. Jesus spoke of death as the last enemy to be destroyed, and said, "If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death;" "He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." And he not only raised Jairus' daughter, Lazarus, and the widow's son from the dead, but he commanded his followers to "heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils" "Why," ask Christian Scientists with Paul, "should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?" And they are endeavoring to learn more of God, and of His relation to man, knowing that nothing is real except that which emanates from Him and is of Him. The material senses testify of many things which are the very antitheses of the spiritual and real; and while these material conditions may seem very real, they are being overcome here and now in the measure of our understanding of God. Mrs. Eddy states the matter very simply when she says (Unity of Good, p. 40): "To say that you and I, as mortals, will not enter this dark shadow of material sense, called death, is to assert what we have not proved; but man in Science never dies. Material sense, or the belief of life in matter, must perish, in order to prove man deathless."
