Autosuggestion, self-mesmerism, hypnotism, and suggestive...

Atchison Daily Globe

Autosuggestion, self-mesmerism, hypnotism, and suggestive therapeutics are not in harmony with Christian Science, which was discovered and founded by Mary Baker Eddy nearly sixty years ago and is defined on page 1 of her book, "Rudimental Divine Science," as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." One great fact which separates Christian Science from autosuggestion is that a patient healed under Christian Science treatment must necessarily be benefited morally and spiritually as well as physically. The human or mortal mind is of itself incapable of thinking accurately. Being so unreliable and changeable, it may repeat any statement of health over and over again, but if the thought governing the mentality is not wholly good, the cure is not scientific. "Willing the sick to recover," writes Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 144), "is not the metaphysical practice of Christian Science, but is sheer animal magnetism." Mortal mind being the cause of disease, how can it be the cure? Jesus said, "A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit." The use of formulas is prohibited in Christian Science. "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding," we read in Proverbs. We attribute all power to God by casting out error and healing the sick through divine Mind alone. The Christian Scientist has the greatest respect for churches of all denominations who acknowledge God to be supreme, and who teach that the way pointed out by Christ Jesus is the only way of salvation. He does no harm to any other body of worshipers of the living God, and is servant of his brother-men anywhere in the world.
