[Written for the Sentinel]

The Promises

O weary heart by care oppressed,
Climbing life's hill with labored breath,
"Be of good cheer," the Savior saith;
Come, I will give you rest.

O grieving heart bowed down with woe,
Striving with tears to find thy way,
Be comforted; hear Jesus say,
All ye my joy shall know.

O lonely heart that seeks a friend,
Know thy sad thought was never true.
The Christ has said, "I am with you
Alway," till worlds shall end.

O sinful heart, lift up thine eyes;
The Christ itself brings thee relief.
Turn thou, and be, like the poor thief,
With him "in paradise."

For every woe that mortal thought
Whispers into thy troubled ear,
The healing truth is written clear
In what our Savior taught.

Cease from the tears that thou hast wept;
Cease from thy futile strife and woe.
Rejoice alway! Forever know
Christ's promises are kept!
