A deep sense of gratitude to God impels me to testify...
A deep sense of gratitude to God impels me to testify of manifold blessings which have come to me through Christian Science. Last September, while working in the field upon an engineering problem, I slipped on a loose bank of earth and fell about four feet, landing on my knees. Two sharp sapling stubs, left from trimmed shrubbery, penetrated my knee and the side of my leg. The wounds bled profusely, and my associates became alarmed. After stopping the bleeding they took me to the nearest town, and even wanted to take me to a hospital and the company physicians; but I asked to be left alone so that I might have an opportunity to know the truth for myself. My condition became worse, however, especially so when it was learned that the stubs were from a large poison ivy vine. I sent for the family car, and was removed to my home, some forty miles distant. I called a Christian Science practitioner in the nearest city and asked for help. His calm assurance did much to clarify my thought and dissipate the fear. For five days I had to have the wounds dressed constantly to absorb their running condition; but upon the sixth day the swelling and the poison left, and upon the seventh day I was up and around, with a tender but healed leg.
It was a remarkable healing; and I am confident that had the leg been treated according to material methods, I might have spent many unhappy weeks in the hospital. In that hour of need I learned to "look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality," as Mrs. Eddy tells us to do in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 261). The last fourteen years have been rich with His promise, so amply proved in the understanding that comes with the study of Christian Science.
