I am grateful that Christian Science teaches us how to pray, how to turn to God with unwavering trust. On page 1 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." This was proved to me a number of years ago, when a case of blood-poisoning was healed through Christian Science, under conditions which so-called material law pronounced impossible. I had cut my finger and the wound became troublesome. Within a few days the pain and burning were intense, and I wrote to a practitioner, fifty miles away, for help. We had gone to the mountains to spend the summer, and those who knew of my condition advised me to go home as quickly as possible, for they said blood-poisoning could never be healed at such a high altitude; but I tried to realize that neither "height, nor depth, nor any other creature" could separate me from God.

The pain was so intense that I could not lie down; and during the long hours of the night I read, and prayed and prayed that I might be taught how to pray understandingly. I was not tempted in the least to leave the mountains, for I had absolute faith that God could heal me there as easily as if I were at home, since He is everywhere. I thought many times of the man with the withered hand whom Christ Jesus healed, saying, "Stretch forth thine hand." And I prayed earnestly that I might be shown how to stretch forth my hand to God—how to pray to Him. I received loving help from the practitioner to whom I had written. The injured finger became entirely infected to the second joint. Then there began a gradual process of renewal, the new flesh, as it grew, slowly pushing the old off, until finally the old hardened and fell away from the new. Although this healing was slow, it was perfect, and the experience brought me closer to God. I am increasingly grateful for Christian Science.
