Christian Science is unceasingly at war with that which...
Morning Herald
Christian Science is unceasingly at war with that which is sensual or immoral. Mrs. Eddy says: "It was about the year 1875 that Science and Health first crossed swords with free-love, and the latter fell hors de combat; but the whole warfare of sensuality was not then ended. Science and Health, the book that cast the first stone, is still at work, deep down in human consciousness, laying the axe at the root of error" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 285). Christian Science teaches purity in thought, word, and deed; and nothing short of purity in its highest sense can satisfy the demands of this Science. The Master said, "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God." Mrs. Eddy says on page 337 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Christian Science demonstrates that none but the pure in heart can see God, as the gospel teaches;" and on page 241 of the same book, she says, "We should strive to reach the Horeb height where God is revealed; and the corner-stone of all spiritual building is purity."
He who unites with The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, must first subscribe to the tenets of that church, as given on page 497 of Science and Health, which include the promise to be pure. One can be worthy of the name "Christian Scientist" only in the degree that he lives in daily obedience to the clear spiritual teachings of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings. Christ Jesus said, "By their fruits ye shall know them." In the metaphysical practice of Christian Science, much healing is accomplished without the practitioner's ever seeing the patient; and in treatment the placing of hands on the patient and manipulation have no part. Mrs. Eddy says: "A Christian Scientist's medicine is Mind, the divine Truth that makes man free. A Christian Scientist never recommends material hygiene, never manipulates. He does not trespass on the rights of mind nor can he practise animal magnetism or hypnotism" (Science and Health, p. 453). Christian Science healing is performed through prayer to the one infinite God, divine Mind, prayer based upon a demonstrable understanding of the true relationship of God and man,—of God as infinite Spirit, and man as His spiritual offspring. In it is included obedience to the Scriptural command, "Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?" That is, it turns thought away from the so-called man of flesh to the contemplation of the real man, the man that the first chapter of Genesis teaches us was made in the image and likeness of God.
