One great healing in my life stands out so clearly and...

One great healing in my life stands out so clearly and definitely that it would come under the human sense of miracle; but in Christian Science we know such a healing is only a natural demonstration of divine power. Mrs. Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 131), "The mission of Jesus confirmed prophecy, and explained the so-called miracles of olden time as natural demonstrations of the divine power, demonstrations which were not understood."

For a number of years I suffered because of floating kidney, kidney stones, and gravel; and when these stones would pass from the body, the suffering was intense. A surgeon who was a family friend insisted that an operation was the only possible means of relief. He was suffering from the same trouble himself, and underwent an operation for the removal of one kidney; but it did not heal the trouble. I was studying Christian Science at the time; and notwithstanding all the opposition from this physician, I held to its truth to the best of my understanding. In my first attack after taking up the study of Christian Science, I was ill for several days. A practitioner was called, and we earnestly declared the truth about God and God's law as stated in Science and Health (p. 468): "Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay. Truth, Life, and Love are substance." At last all pain ceased, and large stones passed, leaving no ill effect. I arose and dressed with great rejoicing in the realization of the ever active Principle of good and of God's law, as given in the first part of the "scientific statement of being," on the same page, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter."

Many months later, suddenly the acute, excruciating pains began again. From a material point of view, more stones had formed and must pass. With much fear I read the Bible and Science and Health, and declared the truth for about an hour, with no apparent results. I reached the telephone and asked a practitioner for aid. She gave me the thought that substance is not material, that no stones had to pass from my body; that it was only false belief that must be given up; that the only substance is "infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (Science and Health, p. 468). I left the telephone and, miracle of miracles, all pain had gone from my body, and in the same manner as if a garment had fallen from my shoulders to the floor. I went about my daily duties in happiness and comfort, rejoicing in the speedy relief and in the blessed understanding and proof of the "scientific statement of being."
