The Bible tells us that the "word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword ... and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." And this "word of God" is not a formula, or something to be confined in a sentence or paragraph.

The human or mortal mind, which Paul called the "carnal mind," and which "is not subject to the law of God" but is "enmity against God," is of itself incapable of thinking accurately. It is unreliable and changeable. It may repeat any formulated statement over and over again; but if the thought is not based on the "word of God," the cure is not scientific, and is only one belief casting out another. The Jews, two thousand years ago, made this mistake with regard to the master Metaphysician, Jesus of Nazareth, and said, "This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils." The way to discard the thinking which has bred disease and discomfort is to put something better in its place. Christian Science urges that this exchange be made, thought for thought, statement for statement; and that words of truth be substituted for the arguments of the carnal, fleshly mind. The consciousness which is glowing with the activity of Truth declared and understood shuts the door upon the erroneous suggestions of error. It urges that the children of men hunt for the promises in the Bible, find any statements of truth contained therein, and think them, speak them, understand them, love them, and live them. Mary Baker Eddy discovered Christian Science in the year 1866, and in her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 167), she writes: "The scientific government of the body must be attained through the divine Mind. It is impossible to gain control over the body in any other way. On this fundamental point, timid conservatism is absolutely inadmissible. Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized."
