Law

"The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple," declared the Psalmist. When men seem beset by the so-called laws of mortal belief,—the laws of food, digestion, assimilation, physical action,—what a rich heritage we may have in the freedom which Christian Science offers from these mundane laws, through the realization that man is subject only to divine law! How the lessons learned in a physiology class, perhaps many years ago, and the seemingly overwhelming beliefs of a large majority of mankind, press in upon the consciousness of him who is seeking to know Truth! Perhaps physiology was followed by anatomy or other similar studies, adding to the multiplicity of the material beliefs to be overcome by spiritual understanding. If he were an attentive student of these subjects and made the details very real to his consciousness, whether or not he were suffering from these beliefs in any way, sooner or later he must realize that they are man-made beliefs, and must substitute for them God's law.

Erroneous law is the outcome of the violation of the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." When one makes a reality, in thought, of anything that is not of the true God, or Spirit, or is not the manifestation or expression of Spirit, he is breaking that commandment. When spiritual law is thus broken, the lawbreaker suffers the penalty; in other words, he removes himself from divine Love, the divine source of all law. And when one is so removed, he is separated, in belief, from true joy, happiness, comfort, peace, and harmony. Even though he may for a season be living in the belief that he is happy in the material consciousness of things, his happiness cannot be real. It becomes real only when he realizes that it is by understanding and abiding by divine law that he can be in possession of true happiness.

The Christian Scientist is learning to understand and make use of spiritual law; for Christian Science has revealed it to him, and he has to some extent demonstrated its operation and results. By this understanding he nullifies the beliefs of material sense, and lives under the divine activity of true law. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 183) Mrs. Eddy states, "Truth casts out all evils and materialistic methods with the actual spiritual law,—the law which gives sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, voice to the dumb, feet to the lame."
