Belief or Understanding

In Proverbs we read, "The knowledge of the holy is understanding." In this day of excitable modern thought, which runs from one thing to another for help, it is well to ponder these words; for in them we see a definition of Christian Science, and one, indeed, correlated to the words of the Master, when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Christian Science, the religion which asks all to understand God, not merely to believe or strive to have a blind and trembling faith in Him, in every page of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, sets forth the fact that really to pray aright, really to grasp some idea of Deity, really to gain the needed answer to prayer, one must learn to understand God. Then it leads the way, step by step, along the path of that precious understanding until the earnest seeker touches the hem of Truth's garment, and receives comfort and consolation.

As a proof that it is understanding based on divine reason and substantiated by tangible results, Christian Science year by year points to healing work done,—healing of sin and disease, of sorrow and of affliction,—thus showing its faith by its works; and because sometimes it has been derided or attacked, it might well ask in the words of the Saviour, "For which of those works do ye stone me?" Yet because it is accomplishing such untold good, Christian Science continues to work, rather than to consume much time in argument of defense; for proof of its demonstrated good is the best answer to any of these empty accusations.
