I want to express my gratitude for a demonstration of God's protecting care which my wife and I experienced in August, 1922. We were on our way to a friend's home in my car, and the route I chose for getting there necessitated driving over a blind five-track railroad crossing that is protected by gates and a flagman. As we approached this crossing, the gates were being raised, and thinking all was clear, I drove on. After crossing the first track, the flagman rang the bell, and I stopped on the track of an approaching fast express train. I thought the train was on a further track, not being able to realize that the flagman would allow us to run into such danger. When I saw the situation, I tried to get clear, but could not get my car into motion quickly enough. The only thought that flashed through my mind was Christian Science; and I assured my wife we were all right, just as the crash came. I knew that we could not escape being hit, but also knew we would not be killed.

The train that hit us was an express train which passed that crossing at fifty-five miles an hour; and the whole thing happened in less than a moment. My car was heaped over and around us, a total wreck, but one wheel remaining whole. Neither my wife nor I lost consciousness; and we were on our feet before the train was brought to a stop, both escaping with nothing more serious than a few bruises and some badly torn clothing. My dog, who was also with us, escaped without a scratch. Nothing but God could have saved us from death or horrible multilation; and I am grateful to God, to Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of this beautiful religion, and for the loving help given by a practitioner.
