With all the many blessings I have received through...
With all the many blessings I have received through Christian Science it is as a mother that I am most grateful. When my first child was sixteen months old, Christian Science came to me. I had read only the first chapter of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy when it became so easy to trust the little ones (the second one was then six days old) to God. From then on nothing in the way of material aid was used. When the baby was about a year and a half old she fell down four steps, turning a somersault, her teeth catching under the edge of a step. On picking her up I saw the four lower teeth had been nearly torn out. My thought went right out to the only real help there is, God, and in a very short time the child was asleep. Then I carried her to where I had seen a dentist sign, feeling that if the teeth were raised up what I had learned of Truth would keep them there. The dentist put them back in place. There were no other teeth in the lower jaw at the time, so there was no human way of supporting them, and the dentist had no hope of their staying in place; but after the first day the baby ate the soft part of bread, and, on the third, one could not tell that anything had happened.
During the next nine years I learned and experienced the preventive power of Christian Science. The children were free from the so-called diseases of childhood, and went to school uninterruptedly, making more than the average progress. Christian Science also gave me the true idea of discipline, which made it easy to lay the foundation for character building. Then came the year in which we heard so much about influenza, and on a Saturday the younger one had all of the symptoms. She spoke incoherently most of the night; but Sunday morning, even though the fever was still very high, she would not listen to my staying home from church and Sunday school. She said: "If we all do our part, we know God will not fail us. You know you can trust me to Him while you do your work teaching at Sunday school." It meant leaving her alone for three hours. Does some mother ask, "How could you do it?" It was the realization of God's nearness, goodness, and power which made it possible; then, too, my thought was lifted in prayer — the prayer of adoration, praise, and gratitude for knowing that He does heal "all thy diseases" and those of all mankind, rather than begging that He care for mine. When her sister and I returned, we found her quietly sleeping; and on Monday morning she was ready for school.
Later, there came an experience which made me even more grateful, if possible, than all these things had done. I was called upon to send the children alone from Chicago, where we then lived, to St. Louis; while I was to go East. They were then eleven and thirteen years old. Among other directions I told them to send me a message as soon as they were met, and before leaving the station. When nine o'clock came that evening and I had not heard, I knew something had gone contrary to expectations. By eleven I learned that the one who had taken them to the station and sent the telegram with time of arriving to those with whom they were to be had made a mistake, saying Saturday instead of Thursday. I was thankful for the strength which kept me from showing how terribly I felt, and so did not add to an already overwhelming self-condemnation.
