The Lectures

Council Bluffs, Iowa (First Church). — Introducing Mrs. Blanche K. Corby, a Christian Science lecturer, James Baldwin spoke as follows: —

In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy makes this statement (p. 216): "Spirituality lays open siege to materialism;" and then she follows with the question, "On which side are we fighting?" There are many here this evening who know how much depends upon the answer one can make to this question.

Years ago I made an extensive study of Mr. Darwin's "Origin of Species" and "Descent of Man," and numerous other writings on the subject of material evolution. I knew nothing of Christian Science at that time and was searching for light; but in it all I became more confused and dissatisfied. I saw then as I see more clearly now, that if matter evolved life and being, as taught by those theories, then there is no escape from the conclusions that man returns to dust and unconsciousness; but I can testify from personal experience that such a conclusion has nothing in it to satisfy.
