There are no words adequate to express what Christian Science...

There are no words adequate to express what Christian Science means to me, and has meant in my life during the past fifteen years. Deep, heartfelt gratitude impels me to give this testimony to the healing efficacy of the Christ, Truth, as revealed in this age by Mary Baker Eddy.

From childhood I was delicate, and almost constantly under the care of physicians. My life had been most unhappy, and the loss of nearly everything I held dear had made me feel I did not wish to live. Serious internal conditions were manifested, which the physicians said required an immediate operation; and, even then, they could not vouch for my recovery. I submitted to two operations, a week apart, and then returned home, — weak, ill, and suffering from many so-called after effects. I weighed but eithtyfive pounds; and my system seemed poisoned by the many powerful drugs and narcotics which had been administered. Nervous prostration followed; and an organic difficulty from which I had suffered since childhood, and for which physicians said there was no cure, became aggravated. Almost continuous headaches and a great sense of depression, added to all these other difficulties, made life miserable.

In this hour of need a friend lent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read this book the first time to find out just what my Christian Scientist friend believed. I began the second reading with an earnest desire to understand somewhat of its teachings for myself. Four points seemed to stand out clearly to me from the first. One was that the God of Christian Science is a tender, loving Father-Mother, — something I had never known humanly. I found that God is Life and man is His reflection; consequently, I could not die out of my troubles, physically, but must learn to meet and master them through spiritual understanding. The third discovery brought much joy: it was the fact that Christian Science gave me something which I could understand and apply for myself. Only those who, like myself, have "suffered many things of many physicians," know why I so rejoiced over this opportunity to work out my own salvation. This does not mean that I have not the sincerest gratitude for the kindly physicians who sought to help me. The fourth point seemed to stand out in differing phraseology on almost every page of Science and Health: that God, infinite good, is the only Mind, cause, power, and creator: and that nothing has reality or existence apart from that which He creates. Immediately I began to reason that the seeming conditions which I was manifesting were certainly no part of infinite good; therefore they could not be real; and that it was impossible that I could know, fear, or experience something of which God was not conscious. Studying and applying that which I was able to grasp, in these simple ways, I found peace, joy, assurance, and a real desire to live flowing into my consciousness. Dropping all reading except the Bible, together with Science and Health and other Christian Science literature, step by step I gained, until entirely healed of each of the above mentioned conditions, together with many others.
