In explaining the character of the Supreme Being, Christian Science...

Woodburn Independent

In explaining the character of the Supreme Being, Christian Science applies to Deity the endearing terms of Father and Mother, thus the better to indicate the loving and tender relationship which exists between God and His children. Those who have felt the beneficent influence of Christian Science in their lives are very naturally grateful and have a high regard for Mrs. Eddy, to whom the world is so deeply indebted for the discovery of this Science of Christianity, but they do not deify or worship her.

One must be ignorant indeed of that which he assumes to judge and condemn, to say that Christian Scientists do not pray. To be a Christian Scientist and not to pray is an impossibility, for prayer is an essential in the practice of this Science. An entire chapter, the very first chapter, in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," of which Mrs. Eddy is the author, is devoted to the subject of prayer. Christian Science is proving its effectiveness by healing all manner of disease and sin, and this success is due to Christian Scientists' praying, and praying aright. The apostle James says, "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss;" and Christian Science is demonstrating by its works that it is the prayer of affirmation (rather than the common form of mere petition), the prayer of an understanding faith, which is the kind that "availeth much" and proves the truth of the psalmist's declaration that "God is . . . . a very present help in trouble."
