The Lectures

London, England (Third Church).—Following are the remarks made by E. G. Porter, when introducing a Christian Science lecturer, George Shaw Cook, to his audience:—

The question asked by Pilate of our beloved Master two thousand years ago, "What is truth?" has ever since been recurring down the ages; and it has been answered by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in the Preface of her textbook (p. viii), "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," in which she says: "The question, What is Truth, is answered by demonstration,—by healing both disease and sin." All here will no doubt remember the well-known words of Jesus when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free;" and the truth he referred to here is the same truth as taught in Christian Science to-day. And what does this truth free us from? From all kinds of disease, fear, worry, sin; and, in fact, every ill that "flesh is heir to."

In my own case this glorious Christ, Truth, freed me from a life which had led me into hell itself; freed me from what medical thought had named an incurable disease; freed me from financial trouble; freed me morally, and has given me a peace that passeth all human understanding,—a peace that can be described only in the words of the Master when he said, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you." I do not think you would have found a more wretched and miserable person on the face of the earth ten or eleven years ago; and yet to-day I thank God you would not find a happier man, though many as happy. Now, Christian Science is logical; and I think all here will agree with me that if this glorious Christ, Truth, as taught in Christian Science, has done this in my case it will do the same for any one here or elsewhere.
