Among the Churches

Current Notes

Portland, Ore. (First Church).—The Christian Science church on Eighteenth Street is one of the outstanding architectural features of the west side. In common with most of the other churches of the city, it serves to prove, by its appearance, that the congregation worshiping there is appreciative and prosperous. It is of simple design, and the snow-white exterior and well-balanced pillars at the entrance serve to give it an attractive exterior. Churches such as this one are an ornament to any city, and a most excellent indication of the wholesomeness of the religious life of the community.—Portland Oregonian.

Melbourne, Australia (First Church).—An imposing building erected at the intersection of St. Kilda Road and Dorcas Street by the Christian Scientists will be known as First Church of Christ, Scientist. The treatment is in the free classic style, with the classic feeling specially emphasized by a columned portico of the Ionic order. To relieve severity of line, the large semicircular windows have curved pediments. An additional relief is afforded by a dome roofed with copper plating specially treated so as to give it a metallic green surface. The building is in two stories, the upper being used for the church services. Here there will be accommodation for six hundred persons. The lower story, which is slightly smaller, will serve as a Sunday school.—Melbourne Argus.

Culver City, Calif. (Fourteenth Church, Los Angeles).—Culver City's Christian Science Society has been recognized as a church under the name of Fourteenth Church of Christ, Scientist, of Los Angeles. The triangular corner of Ferris Drive, Charnock and Watseka Avenues, was purchased with the intention of erecting a fine church there soon.—Culver City Leader.
