Constructive Ushering

When one has been appointed an usher in a Christian Science church he should realize that he has been given not only a reward, but a duty to perform that will require work and demonstration. The usher should be punctual and regular in attendance, sincere and conscientious in doing this church work. He should also learn to work cooperatively with his fellow-ushers, and not let personal grievances disturb him. This can be done only in the ratio that he acquires spiritual understanding, and thereby lives up to the teaching of the Golden Rule. He must experience the uplifted thought which spiritual understanding brings, and endeavor to reflect love, charity, and kindness.

In some Christian Science churches ushers' meetings are held sometimes before the Sunday morning service. The reason for this is that thought may be spiritualized by reading from the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, and by holding silent prayer, concluding with the audible repetition of the Lord's Prayer. True prayer is correct thinking, and is inseparable from correct acting.

We also learn that the work of an usher stands as a testimonial of gratitude for Christian Science, the gratitude that each usher feels as a result of doing his best in this service of God, Love. He knows that Truth and Love are the power that attracts good, and repels error. This knowledge helps him to work constructively. The usher must necessarily welcome the strangers to the church, and escort them to their seats; but, besides this, he has a higher work to do. If he is to do constructive ushering, he must gain a clearer and higher vision of what the true Church is; and, then, his concept of ushering will be elevated from a material to a divinely metaphysical basis. As Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 95), "Material sense does not unfold the facts of existence; but spiritual sense lifts human consciousness into eternal Truth."
