In gratitude for what Christian Science means to me I...

In gratitude for what Christian Science means to me I send this simple testimony, hoping that it may help others who feel that they have no great healing of which to testify. Christian Science, as revealed by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, came to me as a great and luminous light in May, 1917. In September of that year I sailed as a war nurse to France, and my first opportunity there for proving the truth of Christian Science remains in memory as a happy milestone.

Three thousand miles from home, no other Christian Scientist that I knew of near, unable to telegraph to Paris on account of military regulations, in a large military camp hospital in the north of France, my throat started to swell and became very painful. It was in December—cold and damp; and on account of scarcity of fuel, our sleeping quarters, shared with fourteen other nurses, and the mess hall, were without fire. Unable to eat or sleep, still strength was given me not to tell either nurse or doctor of my seeming condition, although those near me kept asking if something was wrong; and I kept on the necessary hours of duty. Every free minute I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and on duty the "scientific statement of being" (p. 468) came to me over and over again, particularly, "All is infinite Mind." After about eighteen hours it was as if a veil were suddenly lifted from my eyes, and I exclaimed aloud, "Why, of course, 'All is infinite Mind,' " and instantly all swelling and soreness left my throat, never to this day to return. Such joy followed this, my first glimpse of the power of Principle!

Shortly after, glasses that had been worn for thirteen years were laid aside; and I returned to America after sixteen months' military nursing service with a clear health record, never having lost a minute from duty. I had indeed found that, as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 444), "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.'"
