Weekly Herald
In a recent issue of your paper, a Welsh evangelist is reported as having classified Christian Science along with bolshevism and spiritualism, and characterized it as "of the devil." Now, far from having anything in common with the teachings or methods of either bolshevism or spiritualism, Christian Science teaches that the universe—including man—is governed by divine Principle, the origin and governor of all that really exists, and that in proportion as human beings gain an understanding of, and live in obedience to, this divine Principle, law and order prevail and harmony reigns. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy has written (p. 106): "God has endowed man with inalienable rights, among which are self-government, reason, and conscience. Man is properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love." Christian Science is, in fact, the antithesis of spiritualism, for in its revelation of immortality it rests, not upon material personalities but upon divine Principle. As far back as the days of Jesus of Nazareth it was not unusual for those who professed an accepted form of belief to condemn any other teaching which was not understood and to describe it as "of the devil;" but, as Mrs. Eddy has written in Science and Health (p. 483): "If any system honors God, it ought to receive aid, not opposition from all thinking persons. And Christian Science does honor God as no other theory honors Him, and it does this in the way of His appointing, by doing many wonderful works through the divine name and nature."
