The Golden Rule
If there be any one characteristic which preeminently stands forth in our Leader's life, even as it did in the life of Christ Jesus, it is her love for mankind. In the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 8) Mrs. Eddy says: "Christian Science can only be practised according to the Golden Rule: 'All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.' (Matt. 7:12.)" This rule, when obeyed in its entirety, will bring about the complete millennium.
In every human breast there is a desire, be it ever so faint, to be Godlike, pure and true; and, like the tender, tiny stalk of the fresh growing plant, it must be nurtured to be kept alive. Not only do we need to watch that it does not lapse into a state of seeming dormancy, but we also need to be alert to the recognition of the Herod thoughts of self-will, greed, jealousy, lust for place and power, which would project themselves into the human mind if given the least encouragement, and thereby attempt the destruction of the Christ-idea.
Fear is the procurator of much of the discord in human experience. It is the basis of greed, selfishness, envy, and hate, which rupture the brotherhood of man. Man is God's child, spiritual and eternal. Each child has his own individual place in God's plan. No one can fill his place or take it from him. By God's law he is supplied with all that is rightfully his, with whatever he needs; and he need not fear that any one can rob him of his heritage. We are all children of the one heavenly parent, divine Mind; and in this Mind we are at one with God and with each other. God governs and controls His universe in one eternal unfoldment of good, which no so-called law of mortal mind can retard, pervert, or obliterate. In the Concordances to Mrs. Eddy's writings there are numerous references to the Golden Rule, besides the many statements of truth relative to brotherly love. In the sixth and last tenet, on page 497 of Science and Health, we find the same loving admonition.
