"The way of holiness"

In the Scriptures we read, through the exalted thought of Isaiah, "And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness." Prior to this prophecy, Isaiah has given a description of the wilderness and the solitary places, which shall be made glad because they are to be transformed and made to blossom as the rose; the thirsty lands are to become as springs of water, so that all flesh may see the glory of the Lord. In this vivid picture, which presents a joyful heralding of the coming of Christ's kingdom on earth, the eyes of the blind are to be opened, the ears of the deaf unstopped; the lame man is to leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb to sing.

In the fullness of time, when Christ Jesus came on earth and performed his marvelous works of healing in fulfillment of ancient promise, he opened the way of salvation for all mankind who would listen, understand, and follow the teachings of the great Exemplar. But alas, this way, which had cost the Master so much to present to humanity, gradually became obscured through the dust of creeds and dogmas, until at the end of about three hundred years the Christ-method of healing the sick and the sinning by spiritual means alone was practically lost to many succeeding ages.

The prophet foresaw this condition of human ingratitude and forgetfulness, which resulted in the discontinuance of divine healing; for, as he looked through the mists of time and space, he seems to have seen an unassailable way of redemption for all who returned to the true way. As the prophet gazed still farther into the future, did he see the way inaugurated by Christ Jesus again appearing in the way of Christian Science, or universal divine healing? Be that as it may, he summarized the situation by saying that "it shall be called The way of holiness;" and whatever of help the student may glean from pondering the prophet's vision, it rests with himself to walk in a veritable "way of holiness," in consonance with the spiritual interpretation of the Biblical account, which Christian Science reveals.
