Among the Churches

Current Notes

Westmount, P. Q., Canada (First Church).—The rural population of the Province of Quebec have been somewhat intimidated against Christian Science, by the report which had been circulated that "the law was against Christian Science;" and as farmer folk have a great respect for law, some of them were prejudiced against it because of these reports coming from the Provincial Legislature. This present year, a victory for Christian Science has been won over this legislative opposition of long standing. First Church of Christ, Scientist, Westmount, P. Q., has obtained incorporation, the first charter to be granted to a Christian Science church in this province, although this branch of The Mother Church had applied for a charter the year it organized, and the year following, 1908—1909, without success. Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 206), "In the scientific relation of God to man, we find that whatever blesses one blesses all."

About two years ago, in this province, a long-standing case of restricting the rights of Christian Scientists regarding school taxes was decided in favor of the Christian Scientists, after years of a circuit court's opposition. This legal opposition was so pronounced that the case was sent down to Quebec to the Provincial Legislature, and again referred back to the Circuit Court for a final decision; and after the question was decided that Christian Science was a religion of a Protestant character, the verdict was given accordingly. The Christian Scientists know that the proof of their religion is not depending on a lawsuit to justify it; but the divine Love which sustains them while undergoing untoward conditions is clearing the atmosphere of the law courts in the interest of the larger humanity.—Correspondence.

Ontario, Calif. (First Church).—The new First Church of Christ, Scientist, is one of the most attractive of Ontario's many churches. The building is of reinforced concrete construction, finished in a natural gray tone, and topped by a semidome of artistic proportions. The effect is decidedly dignified.—Upland News.
