The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist,...

Post Standard

The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, was built, as are all Christian Science churches, by voluntary contributions from those who have been raised from beds of pain, saved from the throes of sin, and, in many instances, literally snatched from the mortal belief of death itself through the ministrations of Christian Science. To beneficiaries such as these The Mother Church edifice stands, not only as a sign and symbol of God's protecting care, but likewise as a visible expression of their gratitude—a gratitude too deep for words and too sacred for common discussion or controversy. While Christian Scientists fully appreciate the substantial character of their church homes, as well as the significance of their rapid multiplication, they are nevertheless ever mindful of Mrs. Eddy's statement in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 162) that "our proper reason for church edifices is, that in them Christians may worship God,—not that Christians may worship church edifices!"
