[Written for the Sentinel]

Noël

The night of error's darkness wanes,
The morn of Truth is breaking,
And now a worn and weary world
To Love's white light is waking.

The night, star-lit, a promise holds—
The shepherds' thought o'ertaking,
It bids them rise and follow far,
All doubt and fear forsaking.

It bids them rise and seek the truth,
The Christ unborn, undying,
Who comes to earth, in love to reign,
All evil's power denying.

Within each heart where truth is born,
In place of error's seeming,
Within the life where Christ is King,
Through cross and crown redeeming,

There rings again the glad refrain,
All other songs excelling,
Of "Peace on earth, good will toward men"—
God's gift of love indwelling.
