The atonement is a vital, essential part of the teaching of Christian Science, for without it there could be no remission of sin. That there is a spiritual interpretation of the parables and symbolical references in the Scriptures, no one can doubt; for did not Jesus so explain some of them, as, for example, those in regard to the sower and the seed, and the lost sheep? Thus explained, they have been an inspiration and a joy to every one that has had an eye to see or an ear to hear. Jesus' experience on Calvary enabled him to complete his example as the Way-shower, and to give mankind a final illustration of perfect Love. When upon the cross, speaking of his persecutors, he said, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." When on the third day after his crucifixion he arose from the dead, he taught the world by demonstration that his understanding of God was able to resurrect his own body from the grave. He told his disciples in advance that he would do this, as he had done it for others. How necessary are these wonderful proofs of divine power, as encouragement and example to those that truly believe on him; for has he not promised them, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father"?

That it was the spiritual understanding of God and the love for man which Jesus manifested, and not his shed blood that was effective in the remission of sins, is proved by the fact that Jesus was able to redeem sinners, as were also the twelve and the seventy disciples, to whom he so lovingly and carefully imparted this same spiritual understanding, and that, too, long before his blood was shed.
