In the words of Paul, "in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom," would I testify of what great things God has done for me, through the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

My father being a clergyman and sincerely devoted to his work, I was from childhood surrounded by his loving influence and instruction in the Bible as he understood it; and from the age of ten years I was a member of his church, an active participant in all its departments. As I grew older, I filled important positions as the demands of the work required, until at the time of his passing away, which was very sudden, I stepped into his pulpit the following Sunday and filled the vacancy for a short time. All the good that was then gained has never been lost, but there came a time in my life when there was sore need; and turn which way I would there seemed to be no help, but only doubt, fear, discouragement, suffering, and despair. The Bible seemed almost a closed book, and prayer of no avail. I believed God was able to help me, yet for some reason would not. Often I longed to have lived in the time of Jesus that I might have "touched the hem of his garment" and been made whole.

I had been sick for about two years, and was in great distress most of the time. I could be on my feet for only short periods, and had been told by a physician that there must be an operation. Not willing or financially able to undergo this, another kind of treatment was taken for several months. Then one day this physician told me I could never be well, and must not work. For three weeks I went without treatment; and in that time I failed so rapidly I was just as ill as I had been a few months before.
