In November, 1907, Christian Science found me in a deplorable condition, as I had been pronounced incurable. I had suffered from nervousness, stomach trouble, and paralysis of the vocal chords for six years. I had worn a body brace for seven years, and was told never to be on my feet without it. I had been very much opposed to what I thought was Christian Science; but it was the last remedy. Having tried everything else, I turned to Christian Science for healing. To my surprise, I could not remember what I had read at the beginning of a sentence, but the dear practitioner told me that God is Mind, the only intelligence; that I could understand and remember; and that I should claim every good gift. I then began to read and accept the truth as a little child; and to my surprise, I could eat and sleep and work, after having been a semi-invalid for four years. In a short time I began to be able to demonstrate; for I wanted to prove the truth in Christian Science for myself. I was soon healed of deafness and a dread of death. The mental healing was grand; and a childlike joyousness now seemed to possess my consciousness in place of the melancholy and discouraged thought.
I had studied Christian Science about a year before the complete healing came. I found that I was studying Science for the healing of some specific disease; and one day, when the pain seemed more than I could endure, I thought I would get the Bible and see what God had to say to me through the Scriptures. I turned to the eleventh chapter of John, and read until I came to the prayer of Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus. As I read, I found that I had been waiting until my senses told me that I was healed; but here was Jesus, thanking God, before Lazarus came from the tomb. It came like a flash that I was waiting until mortal mind said I was healed of this disease before thanking God, forgetting all the other blessings and healings that had come through the power of God. The healing was grand; for I was healed spiritually, mentally, and physically.
In 1919, influenza developed into pleuro-pneumonia, and suddenly death seemed imminent. The family were sent for and came, but my husband called a Christian Science practitioner, who came at once and lovingly gave me help. I sat up in bed and refused to die, knowing that God is Life, and that in Him I live, and move, and breathe. Through the thought that God is Life and strength, I was able to walk upstairs, and also to attend to my practice as usual, answering the telephone and doing my mental work.
