Twenty-five years ago my husband passed on
Twenty-five years ago my husband passed on. I was left with a year-old daughter, and at that time was too ill to be taken to our old home. My brother brought us to our sister's home, where we lived for two years. I had gone back to teaching, but suffered daily from weakness, faintness, and backahe. I had no desire to live and could not see how I could face the future even for my child. The winters were a dread and full of suffering. When my little girl was three I found a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I read almost all of my time when out of school. It seemed to me too much for any woman to dare to claim, and I looked up every Bible passage quoted by Mrs. Eddy. Whole books of the New Testament were fairly devoured. My great fear was that it was too good to be true.
In a few months my eyes became so much better that things which before had seemed distant looked near. I took off the glasses I had worn for seventeen years and which had lately been ground especially for me. In one treatment I was healed of terrible pains from what was pronounced organic valvular heart trouble. I ceased to have tonsillitis and pleurisy. I began housekeeping as well as teaching, and was better in many ways. My daughter ceased to need medicine three times a day for indigestion, and has only been ill twice since we came into Science, excepting very brief attacks that were over in a night.
We joined a happy, growing church, and I learned to rejoice and in a great measure was healed of sorrow and entirely healed of a desire to die. We have learned to help each other to some extent, and have been allowed to be the channel for helping some friends. I can think of no greater joy than to live so that we may be ready to give this help to others. Christian Science has changed a life of despair into one of joy and gratitude. I have taught in the city schools continuously twenty-five years, and feel that every day has been a demonstration of the power of Christian Science to strengthen, guide, and heal.
