Just a little testimony from one who is a member of The Mother Church, relative to the power of Truth to destroy error quickly and also to mental source of contagion. In this town where nearly everybody had a certain epidemic we, my family and I, were not afraid of it, but did not put forth much mental effort to prevent it; consequently one evening, after a hard day's work, the symptoms came on me very suddenly. My first thought was, that I must go at once to bed and be sick; my next was, What am I trying to be a Christian Scientist for? I laughed, and declared the truth, knowing that disease was not legitimate, was not a law of Him who said, "Let there be light." At once I was free from the distressing symptoms, and very grateful for the result of the above mandate,—"And there was light." For some years we have been having our services in a private dwelling, as we are not many, but we know that Truth is ever at work and the Word never returns unto God void.

Having had many proofs of the power of divine Love to heal, I gladly give grateful acknowledgment through the columns of the Sentinel. It is now about thirteen years since I heard of Christian Science through the healing of a relative of stomach trouble. The textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was lent to me, and I was persuaded to read it. I devoured the book and the uplift was so great that it seemed my trials and cares were all at an end. But I found that in trying to apply what I had read to my daily needs, I must begin with the simplest problems, learning "precept upon precept; line upon line." Of the many healings we have experienced, I will mention but a few. Six years ago my twelve-year-old daughter became ill with sore throat and fever and after a few days, an eruption appearing, we thought it best to call in a physician to diagnose the case. He pronounced it scarlet fever, but knowing we were Christian Scientists, did not offer to leave any medicine. Truth was triumphant, and with the loving help of a practitioner the child made a speedy recovery and not one of the other children became victims of the disease. The suggestion of bad aftereffects was also met and overcome. Another daughter was afflicted with rheumatism and for two days was unable to move herself, but after one week's treatment she was up and walking in the house, and in a few more days was out of doors, taking long walks, all trace of the disease having vanished. There were similar cases in the neighborhood where the patients, using material means, did not recover for nearly two months. Other ills which have yielded to the power of Truth are a malignant sore, tonsillitis, and influenza. For all these benefits, I am very grateful, but far above these is the right understanding I have gained of God and of man in His image. Am also thankful for the writings of Mrs. Eddy, for our periodicals, lectures, and for recent class instruction. My desire is to grow in grace and in the knowledge of the truth and to lose no opportunity to demonstrate this knowledge in the casting out of evil.
