In a recent issue a critic is reported as again making the statement that the healing by Christian Science is accomplished through "string and continued suggestion," a statement that is wholly wrong, and one which has been corrected repeatedly. If the theory of the lecturer's teaching is true, it will be demonstrated by the results accomplished, without the necessity of misleading the public as to the teachings of Christian Science. As has been said over and over in answer to such assertions as the one referred to, let me say again that the healings by Christian Science are not accomplished through suggestion, hypnotism, mesmerism, or any other phase of human will power. Such belief is admittedly dangerous, as its influence is more for evil than it is for good and would place unsuspecting people at the mercy of the evil-minded.
Christian Science healing is accomplished by the power of God, infinite Mind, and no phase of mortal mind or human will enters into its operations or teachings. Through the application of the understanding of the power of God, infinite divine Love, every phase of evil, sin, sickness, and all discord, is overcome, and man is brought into his rightful heritage of harmony and purity. In her rediscovery of the truth Christ Jesus taught, Mrs. Eddy saw clearly the distinction between the power of God and the errors of human will, and she has repeatedly warned mankind of the danger of accepting or believing in any other power than the power of infinite God, good.
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," she says (p. 206): "The power of the human will should be exercised only in subordination to Truth; else it will misguide the judgment and free the lower propensities. It is the province of spiritual sense to govern man. Material, erring, human thought acts injuriously both upon the body and through it. Will-power is capable of all evil. It can never heal the sick, for it is the prayer of the unrighteous; while the exercise of the sentiments—hope, faith, love—is the prayer of the righteous. This prayer, governed by Science instead of the senses, heals the sick."
