Springfield (Ohio) Sun
The editor of the Springfield Christian states that Christian Science cannot be justified by the Bible, that it cannot be gotten from the Scriptures. The truth of the matter is, that the Bible is exactly where Mrs. Eddy found it. She opened it to a text which so directed her thoughts to God as an ever present help in trouble that she arose from her bed healed. Then she gave her discovery to the world, hoping the churches would accept and again perform the healing work of two thousand years ago, which the Master did and commanded his followers to do; but the churches refused, and Mrs. Eddy established the Church of Christ, Scientist.
Mrs. Eddy does not brand every one as a thief who claims to arrive at the true theory of Christian Science without first acknowledging obligations to her, but she very properly did all she could to protect Christian Science from adulteration through misstatement of its teachings, which she found both possible and probable through the unscrupulous as well as the neophyte.
