I wish to express my gratitude for the many blessings...
I wish to express my gratitude for the many blessings that have been mine since I began the study of Christian Science, now more than twenty years ago. Previous to that neither my wife nor I had heard of this religion. A practitioner had been called to the town we then lived in, to treat a lady for an ailment the doctors had not been able to heal. The healing was accomplished through Christian Science in a very short time, but it roused the ire of one of the ministers in town, who used the columns of the daily paper to ridicule the practitioner as well as belittle the method employed. I saw the abuse but paid very little attention to it. My wife, however, who was at that time suffering from tubercular disease, made better use of the incident. She called on the practitioner and after three treatments was permanently healed, and is now strong and healthy. Noting the change, I asked what she had done to bring it about, for she was singing as of old. When she had made plain, as best she could, what had been told her, she added that the practitioner had a book called "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," which was known as the textbook, and it taught all of Christian Science and made the Bible a book understandable. I lost no time in securing a copy; for I was convinced that nothing but the power of God could have healed my wife in so short a time.
The first benefit that I received from reading Science and Health was the overcoming of profanity; then the social drink habit left me; and later, although I was engaged in the manufacture of cigars, I lost all desire for both chewing and smoking tobacco. Soon afterwards I gave up the business. Since then I have experienced many healings. I have been healed of a long standing cough, of catarrh, heart trouble, chills and fever, and many minor ailments. I am thankful for having overcome, in a degree, selfishness, envy, hatred, and revenge; as these have been overcome, physical healing has been more quickly brought about.
I am thankful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, and the blessed privilege of class instruction has been a wonderful help to me. The Christian Science Monitor is the only newspaper I need; all others seem superficial. I am indeed grateful for The Christian Science Quarterly and to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for her interpretation of the Scriptures.
