My first experience with Christian Science was as follows....
My first experience with Christian Science was as follows. I was awaiting trial and out on bail. The outlook was dark, and a friend who was on my bail bond suggested that I turn to Christian Science for help; so we went to a practitioner, and I asked for treatment. The outlook brightened and I received justice. On account of extenuating circumstances a light fine was imposed.
My second experience resulted a year and a half later because I did not take up Christian Science after my first proof of God's love. A similar lawsuit was on. I was unable to obtain bail and was in the workhouse awaiting trial. All material efforts had failed. Evil was about ready to swallow its victim. The Christian Science workhouse committee that visited the institution and held a meeting, included the first practitioner I ever met. Of them can it be truly said, "I was in prison, and ye came unto me." This visit inspired me to turn to Christian Science; so the Bible and the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, were obtained from the library.
As I read the textbook it seemed good, and the more I read the better I liked it. On page 186 we read, "The only power of evil is to destroy itself;" and on page 330, "Evil is nothing, no thing, mind, nor power." These statements seemed almost too good to be true. Every opportunity to read was utilized. Such statements as seemed helpful to me were copied on paper, so I could refresh my mind with them during working hours. Many times I read the greater part of the night. Hope rose within me, for the longer I studied and read Christian Science literature the more sure I became that evil had no power. As the day of trial drew near the outlook brightened, the causes behind all this trouble were revealed, and I learned how to overcome them. The weak point in my character was strengthened. Without a witness I was declared not guilty by a jury in twenty minutes. Christian Science first showed me the nothingness of evil, and then after I was free every one could see it. I was in business for myself at that time, and the greatest and most prosperous business I ever had was after this experience.
