With a profound sense of gratitude I am desirous of narrating a most wonderful demonstration of divine Love, which was the means of bringing my family and myself into the dawn of that glorious light which never fails anyone who seeks it aright; also, I truly hope that it may assist and comfort some weary traveler, who is, as I was, in the slough of despond.

In 1914, a memorable year, I had lost all my money, business, and interest in life. I became very ill, was operated upon, and drifted on through the winter, until well into the summer of 1915. We then met some friends who had returned from Paris, France, owing to the war, and they tried hard to interest me in Christian Science, but I would have none of it, being most bitterly opposed. One of these friends tried to get me to visit a practitioner, which after much persuasion I did, but not receiving any immediate benefits, was still against it. The friend then took my wife and myself, while I was very irritable and ill, to a Wednesday evening meeting at First Church of Christ, Scientist, New York city. After the meeting I stood outside that church vowing that I would never get up and give testimony in any church, but on the following Thanksgiving morning I gave my testimony there, most thankfully indeed.

Shortly after attending this Wednesday meeting, my then only son was seized with an attack of throat trouble in its most malignant form. Our doctor was homeopathic, but owing to fear of quarantine we did not call him in, trying to reduce the condition as best we could. The boy, however, went from bad to worse, until for three days and two nights he lay in a comatose condition, with very high temperature. The third day I told my wife that we must have the doctor and take our chances, because the child was slowly passing away. She then asked me to borrow a copy of Science and Health. I did so, it being very lovingly handed to me from the loan library of Third Church, and brought it home. This was the first time either of us had seen the book. I went out, returning early in the afternoon, when my wife stated that she could not understand the book. I again begged for the doctor, but she asked why we should not try a practitioner, and see if Christian Science could do any good. I went to see the practitioner and asked her to treat my boy, and she said she would right away. I left her apartment feeling very hopeless. While waiting for the elevator to take me down, I happened to look at my watch, and somehow the time made a mental impression to be recalled later; it was one minute to five. I walked home feeling very depressed, taking an hour and a half to do what would have only been twenty minutes by car.
