Desiring to express my gratitude to God and to acknowledge...
Desiring to express my gratitude to God and to acknowledge what the reading of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, has accomplished for me, also to be helpful to those who may read this testimony, I gladly submit the following experience. For over a year I was noticeably deaf, being unable to hear an ordinary conversation unless it was especially directed to me; neither could I hear many consecutive words from a speaker's platform, although seated in close proximity to the speaker. My daily duties brought me in contact with many people with whom it seemed very difficult to converse because of my impaired hearing, and this was most humiliating at times.
For about two months I had Christian Science treatment, but with apparently no improvement. Finally the practitioner and I decided simultaneously to have the treatments discontinued. At this point I tried to work out the problem. We had two different editions of Science and Health, which I closely compared, finding that the later edition gave me a clearer understanding. I tried to realize that I was reading the absolute truth, that many people had been healed by reading this book, and I thought, Why cannot I? Before finishing the chapter on Prayer the healing came. This demonstration proved to me that "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation" (Science and Health, p. 468), for even before I had conversation with anyone the thought came to me very clearly that my hearing was all right. Shortly after this I attended a lecture on Christian Science. Owing to the number of people present, it was necessary to stand up in the middle of the side gallery, but I was able to hear all of the lecture.
A sweet sense of peace has been experienced many times when I remember the words found in our textbook (p. 34), "If Christ, Truth, has come to us in demonstration, no other commemoration is requisite, for demonstration is Immanuel, or God with us." I am grateful to God for His faithful disciple, Mrs. Eddy, through whose message to this age humanity is being redeemed in the way Christ Jesus demonstrated.—(Miss) Mary H. Burgess, Cleveland, Ohio.
