There came to me in April, 1916, a time of deepest sorrow, when I assisted in nursing a dear son in his last illness. He, in mature manhood, chose to have the attendance of physicians and professional nurses, and when the former announced to me that the end was at hand, I succumbed to the sway of mortal mind, and felt myself forsaken of God. Exhaustion, nervous collapse, slight paralysis, and pleurisy followed, rendering me for six days oblivious of my surroundings. It was a singular phase of error that prompted me, in this darkened state, to call for a doctor and medicines, and by a kind of unconscious cerebration to direct for myself the exact method of treatment which had been followed in the case of my son, though I very inconsistently refused to swallow the material remedies offered. A member of my family, not a Christian Scientist, regarding my wish, as she interpreted it, encouraged and carried out this weak idiosyncrasy, until the physician in attendance declared his slight hope of my recovery, saying that I was perceptibly losing ground.

Then a son and a daughter who understood the power of Truth, intervened and called in a Christian Science practitioner, through whose treatments I was lifted out of my sinful weakness, as my sickness might rightly be designated. Now, though advanced in years, I am fully restored to health and activity, and very glad at heart to give to the world the acknowledgment that "he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name;" therefore I can say, "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." Very fervently I give thanks and gratitude to the revered Founder of our glorious faith, which points to us so plainly the way to the great Physician.
