"Already filled"
The statement is made with regard to conditions observed in the realm of physics that "nature abhors a vacuum." Mrs. Eddy, however, makes the absolute, metaphysical statement in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 346), "There are no vacuums." Speaking with special reference to the loss of personal friendships, she says (p. 266), "This seeming vacuum is already filled with divine Love." Since God is omnipotence and omnipresence, there can be no place unfilled by His presence and the activity of His ideas. This can be proved in very practical ways, and stated in terms of present understanding and of present need.
At one time the income of a student of Christian Science seemed to depend upon returns from renting the rooms in her large house. These had been vacant, or only transiently occupied, and in her need she called on a friend for help with the problem. Together they talked it over and endeavored to realize God's omnipresence, knowing there could be no idleness, no waste of labor or of time, no loss or lack of true substance and activity where infinite Mind is, since every place is peopled with divine ideas, about the Father's business. Within a few days the rooms had all been taken, and by a very desirable class of tenants.
Many months later the condition recurred, and the truth was again declared; but this time the rooms remained empty, and both students were at a loss to understand why. It presently developed, however, that the time had come for the householder to leave the work of Martha for that of Mary. The student rented the house to another, took up her residence in a neighboring city, and entered into the practice of Christian Science. It thus became evident that the place which demanded her was filled, through the activity of divine Love; and, again, there was the right one to fill the place she was ready to relinquish. This experience was very instructive to those who had a part in it, and is very cheering to many who are tempted to suffer a sense of disappointment in thinking their demonstration has failed because it is working out in another way than that which they anticipated. The word of Truth, scientifically declared, never fails. Some wrong condition is always changed, and usually more than we ask or think is provided. "In due season we shall reap, if we faint not," said Paul.
