There have been times when the apparently terrible material...
There have been times when the apparently terrible material conditions which I have been through have seemed overwhelming, but I am thankful to say that I have been able to overcome this feeling each time by remembering the truth that I have come to understand in Christian Science. I have been able to do a fair amount of study, and as my understanding of this teaching has increased I have found my troubles and difficulties decrease, so that I am beginning to realize that wonderful peace and happiness "which passeth all understanding," and which defies all inharmonious conditions. I have been in the line many times, on patrol work on No Man's Land very often, and "over the top" once. I have now been made a stretcher bearer, so do not carry arms, but am on a deed of mercy when the battle is raging.
One day I happened to be in a little shelter with four others, and as we got talking in the evening my heart was made very glad when I found that one of my companions had a splendid understanding of spiritual things. Although we were just in from the line, and were wet and tired, we talked for upwards of an hour on this greatest of subjects, and were able to exchange many helpful thoughts. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. It is good to know that all this hate and turmoil is unnatural and must end. I like to think of the day that is coming when the people of the earth will be one in recognizing the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man, and Truth, Life, and Love will be the only lawgiver.
I am very conscious all the time out here in the thick of it, how the love and right thoughts of so many of the good people at home are helping me to keep on the right track, so that I am able to avail myself of the ever present protection of divine Love.
