It so happened that the discovery of Christian Science...
It so happened that the discovery of Christian Science was made during the year of my birth, but I never heard of it until about eighteen years ago, while in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. A friend then incidentally spoke of it in a somewhat make-fun manner, having mentioned that the proprietor of the hotel where we were stopping was a Christian Scientist. At the same time this friend tried to explain the meaning of Christian Science by stating that all there was to it was to believe that an injury did not exist, or if sick, to believe one's self well and one would be well.
A few years ago I passed through six weeks of terrible suffering. At times I was obliged to sit up in bed all night long, on account of the pain. My physician declared all the morphine in town would give me no relief. Finally, after I had been out on crutches about a year and a half, going about with great difficulty, a gentleman from Second Church of Christ, Scientist, of this city approached me on the street car one morning and inquired in a very pleasant manner if I had ever investigated Christian Science. I smiled at the remark, as it seemed more of a joke than anything else; but he was so sincere and so earnest that I, so to speak, sat up and took notice. His splendid references and persistency caused me to think seriously on the subject. I had proved the absolute failure of electrical treatments and medicine, and at that time was undergoing another method of treatment.
A short time afterwards, when the physician was out of the city on his summer vacation and my wife was visiting relatives in Ohio, I decided it was a good opportunity to look up a Christian Science practitioner, as I did not want anyone, even my wife, to know that I was considering this, to me, newly found treatment. I was so well pleased with my first interview with the practitioner that I began treatment at once, with splendid results. While the soreness in the knee was slow to respond, stomach trouble of many years' standing was quickly and permanently overcome. This immediate response so encouraged me that I decided at once that at last I had been directed to God, the one and only Physician who is able to relieve mankind of sin, disease, and fear. I now know that the worst difficulty in my case was fear. I thank God that the gentleman from the Christian Science church prevailed upon me to investigate this teaching, through which fear is successfully overcome, while sin and disease are conquered through divine Love and Truth.
