About four years ago I heard for the first time of Christian Science
About four years ago I heard for the first time of Christian Science. From a sense of duty rather than out of interest I read the Herold which was given to me at the time. Soon, however, I came across a statement which made me keenly interested. It read, "You need believe only what you can prove for yourself." No blind belief, therefore, was asked. I then studied all the Christian Science literature available in the German language, and while doing so a weakness of the eyes of many years' standing disappeared. Previously I was never able to read in artificial light, but now I read through half the night. The many references to the English works convinced me that the German translation constituted but a small part of the Christian Science literature, and I thereupon began to translate for myself one after another of Mrs. Eddy's works. At first things went very slowly, for I had to look up in the dictionary hundreds of words. I now possess all the books by our Leader and subscribe to all the Christian Science periodicals and read them all.
I was recompensed for my efforts in still another manner. A skin disease which was considered hereditary and incurable disappeared, never to return. Many more or less serious illnesses and inharmonies were overcome through Christian Science. One particular case I should like to mention. A short time ago my eldest son had a severe attack of appendicitis. None of the family asked for a doctor, although the symptoms were alarming. I myself was strengthened by the encouraging thought that however small my understanding of the omnipotence and omnipresence of God might be, it was sufficient to solve my problem; and this proved to be the case.
