Sabbath School Lessons
Incorrect criticism of Christian Scientists, to the effect that they do not use the Bible, or that they have a special one of their own, emphasizes the necessity that the children in our Sabbath schools be thoroughly taught the Scriptures. As the discovery of Christian Science would have been impossible for one who was not thoroughly acquainted with the Scriptures, so an appreciation and demonstration of their teachings must rest on the same basis. As we consider the teachings of the Bible more pertinent to every problem of life than do the people of any other denomination, so the children in our Sunday schools should have a knowledge of these teachings not only equal to but even greater than that of other children.
A merely literal knowledge of the Bible will never save any one; indeed it was not until the key to its spiritual interpretation was given to the world by Mrs. Eddy, that complete salvation from sin, disease, and death was to be found in the Scriptures. A knowledge of the historical events and an acquaintance with the characters mentioned in the Bible is, however, practically essential for its interpretation.
The wisdom of our Leader provided that "the first lessons of the children should be the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17), the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13), and its Spiritual Interpretation by Mary Baker Eddy, Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:3-12)" (Manual, Art. XX, Sect. 3).
