Daily Food
Most people are familiar with the history of the children of Israel and their wanderings in the wilderness, and more especially with those portions which are easily applicable to our own experiences. For instance, in the sixteenth chapter of Exodus we find an account of their being abundantly supplied with quail and manna, even though they had repeatedly disobeyed God's commands. An important point in this narrative which is sometimes overlooked is found in the eighteenth verse, where we read, "They gathered every man according to his eating." In "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy has beautifully expressed the same thought in these words: "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies" (p. 307). Jesus said, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
The Christian Science periodicals are channels through which we receive some of this spiritual sustenance, and they are proving themselves valuable allies to the Bible and Science and Health in feeding the multitude with living bread. Very often we hear Christian Scientists express regret because they cannot find time to read all of the articles which appear in these periodicals; or because they cannot understand some article from which others have derived so much benefit. Is not this another version of "they gathered every man according to his eating"?
A Christian Scientist went into a large grocery store one day, and while waiting for her purchase, watched the stream of customers come and go, all intent on having their needs supplied. She observed that it took very little to satisfy some of them, while others went out with their arms filled with bundles. Some bought staples; others desired delicacies; but whatever their need, it was provided from this storehouse of food. The unfoldment which came to her from this incident was of great benefit, for she resolved that henceforth she would let her neighbor choose his own spiritual food.
