Nine years ago I turned to Christian Science for physical healing, after spending the greater part of my life in sickness and intense suffering, all the time possessing a discordant, unhappy condition of thought. From childhood I had suffered from headaches, which became more severe and frequent as I grew older. Another ailment caused periodical attacks of such severe pain that it was usually necessary to call a physician to administer an opiate. I doctored and used nearly every material remedy of which I knew, trying to get relief from these two difficulties which were producing other physical inharmonies. Finally I resorted to an operation, hoping this might bring the desired help, but was again disappointed; however, I continued to use material remedies to get the temporary relief, for I never expected to be well.
Two years after marriage my attention was brought to Christian Science, and I decided to try it at once for physical healing. Two weeks after treatment was begun one of these severe attacks of pain came on, and having turned from material remedies I hardly knew what to do or how to endure the pain. When a friend came in and offered to telephone a Christian Science practitioner I gladly consented, and in less than five minutes after treatment was requested the pain ceased, and I have not had another attack since. In less than five minutes Christian Science had healed a difficulty from which I had suffered and for which I had sought help in material ways all my life. The minor ailments disappeared one by one, but the headaches were not overcome until I had purged from my consciousness such errors as resentment, criticism, judging, sensitiveness, and the various assertions of self. As these long-standing errors were uprooted and gradually expelled, the physical condition became proportionably better, until at last I was free. Through this cleansing of the mentality and its physical effects, I learned how completely our mental condition governs the body; also that it is necessary to keep our thoughts loving, kind, and holy if we would have healthy bodies.
While very grateful for freedom from these ills, I am even more thankful for the spiritual understanding and the great peace and uplift of mind which have come as a result of reading and studying our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I knew nothing of Christian Science as a religion when I turned to it, but for three years previously had been seeking and hungering for something which would satisfy the heart in a religious way. When it was suggested that I try Christian Science for physical healing I did so without even a thought that it had anything for me beyond this. Before I had finished reading the first page of our textbook, such a wonderful peace filled my consciousness that I realized at once I had at last found that satisfaction for which I had been longing, and ever since that day Science and Health has been my nearest and dearest companion. It has opened up a new life to me, and through its inspiring pages I have learned about God, and man in His image and likeness. Its teachings have brought health, peace, harmony, and the desire to serve God and do what I can toward advancing His truth.
