It is with a heart grateful to God, the omnipresent and all-loving...
It is with a heart grateful to God, the omnipresent and all-loving One, and also to our noble Leader, Mrs. Eddy, through whom the understanding of God as the only power has been made possible for us, that I wish to testify to the many blessings which I have received through Christian Science. It was not through illness that I was led to a knowledge of this truth and its blessed activities; it was the "still small voice" which brought the joyous message that God is Love and good only, and that He is the only power.
I was a seeker after God, but the God of the Old Testament had remained a stranger to me, as I failed to see in Him anything but the punishing avenger; but words such as, "Love your enemies;" "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest;" "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone," awakened in me a deep yearning to know more of this greatest of all men who ever lived on earth. I then heard of Christian Science, and a sacred peace came into my heart. I felt secure under God's protection, and in the happy thought that no evil could come nigh me if I remained "under the shadow of the Almighty." Of this I have had innumerable proofs both in a physical and in a mental way, and I would like to make special mention of one demonstration by way of acknowledgment of my indebtedness and in order to show my dear fellow beings how close at hand is the help divine, if we but remain conscious of this fact.
Before the war I used to ride on horseback almost daily, and one morning rode out despite the fact that there had been a heavy rain during the night. Having been given a new attendant, I felt somewhat uneasy, and this condition was communicated to the horse; still I went on riding cheerfully. After a while I put my horse in full gallop, regardless of the fact that I was on wet clay soil. The horse slipped and fell, and I fell to the ground head foremost. I heard the screams of two ladies who had been walking in my direction, but in falling realized that I was always God's child, that divine Love was protecting me, hence I could not come to harm; and so it proved to be. I got up at once without aid, shook the dirt off my suit, and walked toward the ladies who were covering their faces with their hands. According to their sense of things, I was being dragged from under the horse. I asked them to calm themselves and to be assured that, thanks be to God, I was unhurt. They scarcely believed this to be possible, as the fall which they had witnessed had appeared to them a fatal one. In confirmation of my words and of the fact that I was unharmed, I took my horse by the bridle and walked back with them, filled with humility and gratitude for God's omnipresent power.
